Federer beat Nikolay Davydenko
7-5 6-1 7-5
Coming into this match Federer had never lost to Davydenko. He had an amazing 9-0 record against him!!
But Nikolay was a tough customer to beat. Nikolay started his match by breaking Federer in his 1st game! When everyone was thinking about an upset, Federer broke Nikolay in the 5th game. Federer then broke Nikolay again at 5-6 to take the set 7-5. He had too many unforced errors in the 1st game itself. Federer eased thro the 2nd round comfortably winning it by 6-1. He had too many winners & less unforced errors. In the 3rd set, Roger played pathetic tennis to say the least. He was broken thrice in the set which was an uncharacteristic Federer game! But Roger proved everyone why he is the top seed by breaking Nikolay thrice!! After that Nikolay couldn’t gather his shots around & eventually lost the set 5-7. This was Federer’s 26th consecutive US open triumphs! He would be really unhappy with his game. He faces 20 year old Serbian Novak Djokovic who had beaten him in the AMS Canada tournament held in August.
